Mysterious red pupa

We found this on a baby lettuce leaf on Memorial Day, it was only a few millimeters long. Anyone know what it is? Friend or foe?

    I always assume foe until proven otherwise. I think this may very well be a cutworm pupa, which is why we put little collars around our delicate transplants. And I think that weird and wonderful moth we found is an adult. Argh!

      I’m convinced on the pupa; harder to tell about the moth because our picture isn’t that could, but it could be . . .
