MulchFest Congratulations!

15 Jan

Forty-five holiday trees were turned into wood chips during CV’s 2018 MulchFest. The Guess How Many Trees? contest winners are:

  • Ed Woolston, who guessed 45 trees on the nose!
  • In the under age 18 category, Samuel Kwon-Cook, 5, who guessed 50.

Congratulations Ed and Samuel!  Jars of local honey will be left with your door people.

More Positive Results from MulchFest 2018

We are all winners because we have a fresh layer of pine mulch to serve as safety surfacing in the children’s play area, plus extra maple tree wood chips (from chipper folks) to act as ground cover across the space. Besides cushioning children in the fall zones, the chipped organics will help absorb water from rain and reduce puddling, help slow erosion, and help improve soil quality by holding moisture and hosting earth worms.

More than 60 CV residents, of all ages, turned out to help move mulch, donate trees, watch the chomping, serve and enjoy cider and donuts. Some 6 dozen apple cider donuts, plus a couple gallons of cider and coffee were consumed. With comprehensive sorting, waste was minimized; food scraps, compostable cups, and soiled paper went into the brown bin  — and over 45 Christmas trees were diverted from landfill!

Thank You!

Thanks to the help and the organization by CV management and the supers, who worked with the chipper guys to maneuver the machine close enough to the fence to allow it to spray chipped pieces directly onto the slide/climbing wall area. Thanks to all the resident volunteers, we worked efficiently and finished the job in under 3 hours.

Over the next two months, rain and snow will help breakdown the tree material. It will be softer — yet still plentiful, hopefully, — by spring time.  Thanks to everyone who helped make MulchFest a success, including the CV staffers who assisted, the BOD who supported it, and the volunteer groups who sponsored it: the Children’s Committee, the Garden Committee and the Recycling + Sustainability Committee.

During MulchFest 2016, we mulched 60 trees.  For MulchFest 2017, there were significantly fewer…around 30.  What will 2018 bring?

Enter Now!

CV residents of all ages are encouraged to apply.  No limit per household, so more than one child in a family can enter to win a prize.

And Get Ready to Get Your Mulch On!

Shovelers Needed, Doughnuts + Hot Cider Up for Grabs

Volunteers are especially needed to move mulch en mass from the parking lot to the play area Saturday from roughly 1130 am to 1230 pm. We’ll get started as soon as there’s a pile to work from!  Please sign up here, 20 minutes of your time will be appreciated.

The more trees, the merrier for the soil and the kids. Mulch is a valuable and sustainable resource for ground cover that protects soil, helps reduces runoffand suppresses weeds. Plus, mulch is the primary safety surfacing for the play area play ground and protects against potentially fatal head injury from falls.  The more mulch we generate now, the less we’ll need to source later this year for safety surfacing.

How Many Trees Will CV Recycle At MulchFest?

11 Jan

Trees collected as of Thurs 1.11, 2pm

MulchFest approaches! On Saturday January 13th a wood chipper will be on site to mulch all the CV trees.  But how many will we have? As of Thursday afternoon, these trees await the wood chipper in the play area.  But more may be hiding in compactor rooms as well as apartments.

We’re holding a contest… to see who can make the best guess on how many total trees we will have to mulch?

During MulchFest 2016, when Nora’s dad won the contest, we mulched 60 trees.  For MulchFest 2017, there were significantly fewer…around 30.  What will 2018 bring?

Free Hot Cider + Apple Cider Doughnuts This Saturday!

8 Jan

You know that MulchFest is this Saturday Jan 13th, but did you know there will be doughnuts?!??!

Free doughnuts!  Plus, hot apple cider and coffee will be served during CV MulchFest, 10am to 12 noon on Saturday morning behind 195 Adams. Volunteers are especially needed from 11:30 am to 1230 pm to help move mulch from parking lot into the play area, where the chipped up Christmas trees will be used as safety surfacing for the play equipment fall zones.

Sign up to move mulch here.  You don’t need to commit to working for a full hour, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm is the time we estimate that the mulch pile will be ready. Big kids can help too.

Refreshments are new this year; CV MulchFest is co-sponsored by the Children’s Committee, the Garden Committee, and the Recycling + Sustainability Committee.

Stop by! The wood chipper will be chomping up trees between @ 10 am and 12 noon.

Of course, we hope you will also donate your tree, participate in the Guess How Many Trees? contest, check out the unique community happening, and encourage others to participate.

Co-sponsored by the Children’s Committee and the Recycling and Sustainability Committee, this event is fueled by volunteers. Thanks for your support!
